If you're looking for a dark fantasy witch-related binge, you can't do much better than Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

The film packs some surprising revelations and finely tuned characters: sorceresses, wizards, and other beings who pop off the screen all have their moments of goodness, wickedness, and everything in between. It is indeed a true Ghibli classic.

Works earns big points for the wallpaper-worthy visual presentation of this emotional coming-of-age story. The narrative is not without a few tired genre tropes, but if you don't mind closing an eye to them, you're sure to enjoy this precious series.

Our ML Honoka is the stereotypical princess who constantly needs saving, whereas Ayaka is the stoic knight in shining armor. WCW is bursting with zany energy, and it's packed with stupidly funny villains, mighty female cast, magical battles, witchy antics, and hilarity that make for one spellbinding binge.

What makes it good: The three-episode mini-series (or a film, depending on where you stream it) is a spin-off of Bleach. Despite sharing the creator, Tite Kubo, and the universe, this Colorido-produced show works well as a standalone feature. Even if the team-up premise is never fully utilized, the badass leads, unique urban fantasy setting, magical powers, and cool dragon designs add up to everything you'd want from a good witch anime.

What makes it good: Though Izetta is not without rough patches, the World War II-inspired drama is simply a blast in its best moments. The red-haired protagonist is not your usual witch: she wields magical powers over military technologies and flies on a machine gun, destroying everything in her path. How cool is that? After a while, fantasy warfare takes the back seat, and – yuri fans, take note – the show focuses on the relationship between Finé and Izetta.

20. Strike Witches

What's it about: It's the 1940s, and humanity is fighting a war with terrible odds against alien invaders known as the "Neuroi." What makes it good: This military/sci-fi title is not necessarily for everyone since it stocks up on fanservice. It loses points for pantslessness, but there's no denying its good animation, appealing alternate history setting that draws from World War II, dynamic air battles, and badass warrior sisterhood of girls named after WWII flying aces. The show is also very heartfelt, and it'll get you emotionally invested before you know it.

21. Maria The Virgin Witch (Junketsu No Maria)

What's it about: During the Hundred Years' War in France, Maria, a young witch who despises violence, uses her powers to disrupt ​the battles. Archangel Michael notices her meddling, puts her under angel Ezekiel's supervision and warns her that if she wants to retain her magical skills, she must keep her virginity and stop interfering.

What makes it good: Maria crams a lot into its 12-episode runtime, including raunchy comedy, romance, battle sequences, supernatural elements, and human drama dealing with religion, philosophy, and history. The show's strongest appeal is the portrayal of the hardships of medieval witchcraft, but it's an acquired taste. If you're an ecchi comedy guy/gal, and you have no qualms with the focus on the female lead's virginal status, you're all set.

The witchy list can only go for so long, so some decent titles didn't make the cut. Still, you should add them to your streaming queue: Umineko When They Cry with Beatrice the Golden Witch, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS with titular Ririka, Re: Zero with Satella, XxxHolic with Yuko, Maho Girls Precure! with Mirai and Liko and Ultra Maniac with Nina.
