21 best witch anime

1. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica witch anime

Aniplex of America

Watch on: Netflix, Crunchyroll, VRV, Prime Video
MyAnimeList: 8,4
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: A cute furry creature named Kyubey offers to grant any wish to schoolgirls Madoka and Sayaka if they agree to become magical girls and help fight against the evil witches who prey on humans. However, the mysterious Homura, a magical girl with reasons of her own, is ready to do everything in her power to stop the deal.

What makes it good: The show that's now famous for deconstructing the genre popularized by Sailor Moon, Mahou shoujo, is not a light and fluffy affair. It draws from the witch lore, and its grotesque-looking antagonists perfectly complement the psychological and sad anime story that peeks through the cutesy magical girl surface by the 3rd episode. If you're looking for a dark fantasy witch-related binge, you can't do much better than Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

2. Kiki's Delivery Service (Majo no Takkyuubin)

Best witch-related anime: Kiki's Delivery Service

Watch on: Netflix, Vudu, Prime Video
MAL: 8,2
Film | 1h 43min

What's it about: Kiki, a 13-year-old witch, moves to a seaside town with her snarky black cat, Jiji, for a traditional year of training and independence. After a rough start, Kiki sets up a flying delivery service with the help of her new friends and her first suitor. But when her abracadabras fail her, the teen witch must overcome her insecurities to get her powers back.

What makes it good: Instead of evil beings who dabble in black magic, witches are valuable community members in Hayao Miyazaki's coming-of-age story. Kiki's Delivery Service is a good-natured fantasy film that will win you over with seaside cuteness, a few magical traditions, tender romance, humor, and relaxing slice-of-life vibes. The Ghibli-animated charmer is one of the best witch anime out there and a lot of fun for the whole family.

3. Howl's Moving Castle (Hauru No Ugoku Shiro)

Howl's Moving Castle, best witch anime

Toho

Watch on: Netflix, Vudu, Prime Video
MAL: 8,7
Film | 1h 59min

What's it about: Sophie, an 18-year-old girl, was cursed by the spiteful Witch of the Waste to become a wrinkled old lady. Sophie sets out to find a wizard named Howl who could help her break the curse and ends up working as a housekeeper in his moving castle. She falls for the notorious wizard, who the king soon summons to fight in an ongoing war.

What makes it good: This spellbinding tale is rich with wonder, sorcery, gorgeous visuals, sweet romance, and everything else we love about Miyazaki's works, complete with a fantastic steampunk castle on its legs. The film packs some surprising revelations and finely tuned characters: sorceresses, wizards, and other beings who pop off the screen all have their moments of goodness, wickedness, and everything in between. It is indeed a true Ghibli classic.

4. Black Clover

Black Clover anime

Crunchyroll & Funimation

Watch on: Netflix, Crunchyroll, Funimation, VRV, Prime Video
MAL: 8
4 seasons | 170 episodes

What's it about: Both Asta and Yuno, orphans who grew up together, aspire to be the next Wizard King. Unlike Yuno, Asta is born without powers, but the determined and good-hearted boy came to possess a unique five-leaf grimoire that refutes the opponent's magic. The boys join Magic Knights and are committed to working hard to achieve their goals.

What makes it good: It took some time for this shounen to find its footing and mature into the heavyweight it was always destined to be. So hang in there with Black Clover because you're in for a great story chock full of binge-goodness: complex fantasy world, wizardry, comedy, action, and friendly rivalry. And best of all, the initially loud and energetic Asta evolves into a true hero worth rooting for. If you love a good underdog tale, this Studio Pierrot series is for you.

5. Familiar of Zero (Zero No Tsukaima)

Best witch-related anime: Familiar of Zero

Sentai Filmworks

Watch on: Netflix, Crunchyroll, Prime Video
MAL: 7,3
4 seasons | 48 episodes

What's it about: Louise, nicknamed "Zero," is a bumbling mage studying at the prestigious Tristain Academy in the kingdom of Halkeginia who unwittingly summons Saito, a young Japanese man. Saito is stuck with the unpleasant Louise and has to serve her while he tries to fathom how the magical world of Halkeginia works.

What makes it good: Because of the light ecchi, tsundere FL, and harem antics involved, JC Staff's adaptation of the light novel series Familiar of Zero will not be to everyone's taste. However, those who stick around will be rewarded with a fun isekai with enough depth to make the show's rocky start easy to forgive. Expect plenty of witchcraft and Hogwarts-Esque magic, political intrigue, character growth, emotional moments, and sparky romance between the leads.

6. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches (Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo)

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches anime

Crunchyroll

Watch on: Crunchyroll, Funimation, VRV, Prime Video
MAL: 7,6
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: High school delinquent Yamada bumps into the top student, Urara Shiraishi, and the two tumble down the stairs, sharing an accidental kiss that causes them to swap bodies. This newfound power restarts the Supernatural Studies Club to research the legend of the Seven Witches of Suzaku High School and identify all the witches in school.

What makes it good: With 12 short and hilarious episodes, Yamada kun is the perfect witchy treat when you don't have much time to spare. The body-swap series keeps the fillers and fanservice to a minimum and serves up only the good stuff: the girls coming to terms with their powers, the romance between the troublemaker and the nerd, and a whole lot of kissing and other magical hijinks worthy of a spot on any best witch anime list.

7. Little Witch Academia

Little Witch Academia anime

Netflix

Watch on: Netflix
MAL: 7,9
1 season | 25 episodes

What's it about: Akko aspires to be a great spell-caster like her role model, performer Shiny Chariot. Despite her lack of magical talents, Akko leaves for Luna Nova Academia to follow her ambition. There, the enthusiastic girl faces many challenges and gets into all sorts of trouble with her new friends, Lotte and Sucy.

What makes it good: I've heard this referred to as "Harry Potter for girls," and there are undoubtedly many similarities with HP. However, this magical school anime is an addictive viewing experience that anyone can enjoy. With a lovable cast led by the odds-defying heroine, vibrant animation, technology-based fantasy world, clever comedy, and an air of optimism, LWA is a comforting and wholesome anime gem you'll blast through in a weekend.

8. Flying Witch

Flying Witch Anime

Sentai Filmworks

Watch on: Crunchyroll, HIDIVE, VRV, Prime Video
MAL: 7,2
1 season | 22 episodes

What's it about: A budding witch named Makoto reaches the age of 15 and must leave her childhood home to complete her training in rural Japan. The trainee adjusts to a quieter life after moving in with her relatives in the Aomori countryside, exploring the area, going to school, making new friends, and learning how to be better at her craft.

What makes it good: What list of the best witch anime would be complete without this perfect slice of magical life? The J.C.Staff's series is an iyashikei, meaning it's light on plot, conflict, and drama but heavy on comfy feels, gorgeous scenery, gentle music, and calming atmosphere. It doesn't skimp on the witchy business of flying a broom and making enchanted concoctions, either, so cue it up for some magic to lull you into dreamland.

9. Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina (Majo no Tabitabi)

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina anime

Funimation

Watch on: Funimation, Hulu, Prime Video
MAL: 7,6
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: Inspired by the adventures of a traveling enchantress she read as a child, Elaina completes her apprenticeship with Fran the Stardust Witch. She's now a full-fledged Ashen Witch, ready for a grand journey of her own. The wandering witch follows the path wherever it may lead, visiting unusual places and meeting various people along the way.

What makes it good: This episodic fantasy adventure tells its short stories without making Elaina a hero or focusing squarely on her. This anime witch is a traveler, an observer that doesn't look to interfere with other people's lives or conflicts, and if she's your kind of protagonist, you'll enjoy this show. The show's 12 episodes flit between dark and cheerful, and the two extremes work so well together, it's almost like magic.

10. Soul Eater

Soul Eater anime

Funimation

Watch on: Netflix, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Hulu, Prime Video
MAL: 7,8
4 seasons| 170 episodes

What's it about: Run by the Lord Death, the Death Weapon Meister Academy (or Shibusen) creates pairs of fighters, one of whom transforms into a weapon wielded by a partner their soul resonates with – a Meister. Maka and Soul are one such duo, with the goal of harvesting 99 evil human souls and one witch's soul to advance to Death's most potent weapon against evil, the Death Scythe.

What makes it good: Witches are the bad guys in this Studio Bones work that's well on its way to becoming a cult classic. Insanely enjoyable and beloved for its wacky premise, distinct animation, flashy action, slapstick comedy, and a fun cast, Soul Eater is a must-watch. It's a wild ride, but one grounded by heartfelt themes like friendship and courage and character quirks that elevate it a cut above your typical battle shounen fare.

11. Grimoire Of Zero (Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho)

Best witch anime: Grimoire Of Zero

Sentai Filmworks

Watch on: Netflix, HIDIVE, VRV, Prime Video
MAL: 7,1
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: A witch called Zero hires a "Beastfallen," a human cursed with the tiger-like appearance, as her guard and dubs him Mercenary. She promises to lift his beastly curse, but first, he must help her retrieve the stolen Grimoire of Zero. Joined by another witch, Albus, they set out to find the spellbook before it falls into the wrong hands.

What makes it good: Grimoire Of Zero may not be as inspired as the titles higher up our best witch anime list, but it's well worth a look for fantasy adventure enthusiasts. The White Fox studio stacked Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho with factional conflicts, witchy lore, sorcery and magic (there's a difference!), hilarious moments, and the chemistry between the unlikely allies that will light up your screen.

12. Iroduku: The World in Colors (Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara)

Iroduku: The World in Colors anime

Amazon Prime Video

Watch on: Prime Video
MAL: 7,5
1 season| 13 episodes

What's it about: Hitomi, a 17-year-old witch descendant, became colorblind as a child and lost her interest in enchantment. Her grandmother, a powerful witch named Kohaku, transports the anti-social girl 60 years back in time to help her. Hitomi meets young Kohaku, an artist named Yuito, and other people who help her open up and restore magic and color to her life.

What makes it good: Irodoku is a lovely blend of magical realism, time-traveling, slice-of-life elements, and high school romance that'll pull at your inner teenager's heartstrings. Also, P.A. Works earns big points for the wallpaper-worthy visual presentation of this emotional coming-of-age story. The narrative is not without a few tired genre tropes, but if you don't mind closing an eye to them, you're sure to enjoy this precious series.

13. Witch Craft Works

Witch Craft Works anime

Crunchyroll

Watch on: Crunchyroll, VRV
MAL: 7
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: Honoka is an average student who rides the bus next to the school's "Princess," Ayaka, but has never spoken to her. That changes when Honoka gets attacked by a group of evil Tower Witches, and Ayaka rescues him. She then reveals herself to be a fire witch from the Workshop Witches' order, on a mission to protect Honoka at all costs.

What makes it good: This series isn't perfect, but it's fun and has some exciting gender politics on its mind. Our ML Honoka is the stereotypical princess who constantly needs saving, whereas Ayaka is the stoic knight in shining armor. WCW is bursting with zany energy, and it's packed with stupidly funny villains, mighty female cast, magical battles, witchy antics, and hilarity that make for one spellbinding binge.

14. Burn The Witch

Burn The Witch anime

Crunchyroll

Watch on: Crunchyroll, VRV
MAL: 7,1
Film | 1h 3min

What's it about: Reverse London is a world hidden away from Front London where magic thrives, and dragons are alive and well. That's where witches Noel Niihashi and Ninny Spangcole work as agents of Wing Bind, an organization that manages the dragon population and keeps the unsuspecting citizens of Front London safe.

What makes it good: The three-episode mini-series (or a film, depending on where you stream it) is a spin-off of Bleach. Despite sharing the creator, Tite Kubo, and the universe, this Colorido-produced show works well as a standalone feature. Even if the team-up premise is never fully utilized, the badass leads, unique urban fantasy setting, magical powers, and cool dragon designs add up to everything you'd want from a good witch anime.

15. Witch Hunter Robin

Witch Hunter Robin anime

Funimation

Watch on: Funimation, Prime Video
MAL: 7
1 season | 26 episodes

What's it about: STN (or Solomon), a shadowy organization, is tasked with capturing witches. They employ hunters who use the "Orbo" substance to negate their prey's power and craft users with uncommon abilities, such as Robin, who joins STN's Japan division. But, when some dark secrets come to light, Robin is about to become the hunted.

What makes it good: This early 2000s offering, which imagines craft users as genetic mutants, takes its sweet time with plot development. Nevertheless, the patient viewers may look forward to a stylish drama that frequently slips into horror anime territory. Witch Hunter Robin boasts the superpowered FL and is full of goth vibes, haunting music, and dark mysteries from ancient times. Its brand of witchcraft will appeal to fans of occult anime, while its mature storytelling will connect with the Josei crowd.

16. Sugar Sugar Rune

Sugar Sugar Rune witch anime

Studio Pierrot

Watch on: BetaSeries
MAL: 7,5
1 season | 51 episodes

What's it about: Chocolat Meilleure and Vanilla Mieux are contenders for the Queen of the Witch World's throne. They travel to the Human World to compete in collecting human hearts by making young boys fall in love with them to determine the winner. The girls vowed to be best friends for life, but will their rivalry ruin everything?

What makes it good: Sugar Sugar Rune is just what you need when you want to kick back and enjoy the glitter and sparkle of a Mahou shoujo genre. It's all here: transformation sequences, wands, ear-worm songs, big laughs, romance, and school life. And that silly premise of capturing boys' hearts? It evolves into something truly remarkable. If you're a shoujo fan, this sweet and peppy story is not the one to miss.

17. Tweeny Witches (Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu)

Tweeny Witches

Watch on: Available on Amazon
MAL: 7,1
1 season | 40 episodes

What's it about: Arusu (or Alice) is a schoolgirl who believes in magic because of a book her father gave her before he went missing. A book-related mishap transports her to another world where magic exists and witches and warlocks rule. However, the spellwork there is misused for oppression, and the determined Arusu sets out to change things for the better.

What makes it good: The show moves quickly, wasting no time fleshing out its Witch Realm and delivering an engaging, Alice in Wonderland-inspired story. Arusu is a spunky anime witch you'll cheer on from start to finish, and her heroic journey makes for a perfect witch-themed series all family members can watch together. Magical shenanigans, broom-flying action, and Halloween aesthetic? Check, check, and check.

18. Rental Magica

Rental Magica anime

Nozomi Entertainment

Watch on: Funimation, Prime Video
MAL: 7
1 season | 24 episodes

What's it about: Itsuki took over Astral, his missing father's company that employs a variety of magical users and supernatural beings and rents their services to clients in need. In addition to losing his father, Itsuki now has to deal with a demonic right eye, his employees, ardent admirers, and business rivals.

What makes it good: The blend of romance, action, mystery, and comedy in Rental Magica doesn't always work, but it will appeal to those interested in different cultures and their ideas of enchantment. When it comes to diverse magical practices, this series has it all: Celtic, Solomonic, Shinto, Onmyodo, alchemy, and more, with a bit of insight into each. There is also a slew of characters to love, ranging from sorceresses to yokai.

19. Izetta: The Last Witch (Shuumatsu no Izetta)

Izetta: The Last Witch

Crunchyroll & Funimation

Watch on: Crunchyroll, Funimation, VRV, Prime Video
MAL: 6,8
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: It's the 1940s, the imperialist Germania starts a war across Europe, and sets its eye on the small alpine country of Eylstadt. Determined to save her home, the crown Princess Finé turns to Izetta, her childhood friend. Izetta is said to be the last witch alive, and she's more than willing to defend Eylstadt from the invasion and protect the Princess.

What makes it good: Though Izetta is not without rough patches, the World War II-inspired drama is simply a blast in its best moments. The red-haired protagonist is not your usual witch: she wields magical powers over military technologies and flies on a machine gun, destroying everything in her path. How cool is that? After a while, fantasy warfare takes the back seat, and – yuri fans, take note – the show focuses on the relationship between Finé and Izetta.

20. Strike Witches

Strike Witches anime

Funimation

Watch on: Crunchyroll, Funimation, VRV, Prime Video
MAL: 7
2 seasons | 24 episodes

What's it about: It's the 1940s, and humanity is fighting a war with terrible odds against alien invaders known as the "Neuroi." The only ones who can stop them are a team of magical soldiers, Strike Witches. Yoshika Miyafuji is a newcomer to the team who is learning the intricacies of fighting back with a combination of weapons and magical powers.

What makes it good: This military/sci-fi title is not necessarily for everyone since it stocks up on fanservice. It loses points for pantslessness, but there's no denying its good animation, appealing alternate history setting that draws from World War II, dynamic air battles, and badass warrior sisterhood of girls named after WWII flying aces. The show is also very heartfelt, and it'll get you emotionally invested before you know it.

21. Maria The Virgin Witch (Junketsu No Maria)

Maria The Virgin Witch anime

Funimation

Watch on: Funimation, Prime Video
MAL: 7,1
1 season | 12 episodes

What's it about: During the Hundred Years' War in France, Maria, a young witch who despises violence, uses her powers to disrupt the battles. Archangel Michael notices her meddling, puts her under angel Ezekiel's supervision and warns her that if she wants to retain her magical skills, she must keep her virginity and stop interfering.

What makes it good: Maria crams a lot into its 12-episode runtime, including raunchy comedy, romance, battle sequences, supernatural elements, and human drama dealing with religion, philosophy, and history. The show's strongest appeal is the portrayal of the hardships of medieval witchcraft, but it's an acquired taste. If you're an ecchi comedy guy/gal, and you have no qualms with the focus on the female lead's virginal status, you're all set.

The witchy list can only go for so long, so some decent titles didn't make the cut. Still, you should add them to your streaming queue: Umineko When They Cry with Beatrice the Golden Witch, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS with titular Ririka, Re: Zero with Satella, XxxHolic with Yuko, Maho Girls Precure! with Mirai and Liko and Ultra Maniac with Nina.

*Streaming services' anime catalogs vary depending on your location.
